Schrebergaart: a documentary about garden communities. Directed by Yann Tonnar
Documentary, 55 min
Production: Samsa Film
600 gardeners, 90% immigrants, 4 seasons, 1 film
Not all lawns are equal in the world of allotment gardening. The sheds may look similar, but cultural clashes seem inevitable. In Yann Tonnar's documentary film about allotment gardens in Esch-Alzette (Luxembourg), native seniors plant their vision of the world with the potatoes into the ground, just as next door the many immigrants proclaim their plot as part of their homeland. "Garden Stories" is not only about subsistence gardening in the shadow of a steel factory, but reveals the microcosm of a rapidly changing industrial society. And like industrial society, the garden associations need their rules to stick to, to prevent them from being overwhelmed by change. Because you need to have structure and discipline: you can't plant cabbage in the middle of the carrots!
